What a Long-Distance Move From Jacksonville Costs
Local moves in North Florida and South Georgia are billed by the hour: for context, our local quotes typically start at $150 per hour for two movers or $195 per hour for three movers, plus a typical one-time $150 truck fee with a two-hour minimum (and a typical $50 fuel charge for local trips outside Jacksonville city limits, such as St. Augustine). Long-distance moves work differently: they are priced mainly on distance and how much you're moving, then adjusted for access, services and timing.

The miles set the baseline: fuel, driver time and how many days the truck is committed to your move. A run up I-95 to Savannah and a move to New York are priced in different worlds.
How Much You're Moving
The size of your load comes from the in-home walkthrough, so show the estimator everything. Garages, sheds and screened lanais are easy to forget: patio sets, tools, bikes and kayaks that nobody mentions until moving day.
Access at Both Ends
Mention stairs, elevators, long carries, and HOA rules up front so we can plan access at both ends—there are no stair fees. Some gated and HOA communities limit move hours or ask for a certificate of insurance before a truck can enter, so check the rules at both ends early. Older neighborhoods with narrow, tree-lined streets can be tight for a large truck, and the destination can have the same problem, sometimes requiring a smaller shuttle truck for the last leg.
Services and Your Date
Packing, crating, storage between homes and very heavy items add to the transport price. Summer is peak season, and the last days of the month tend to fill first because leases turn over. A mid-month weekday in fall or winter is usually easier to book.

In recent sales calls, our long-distance quotes typically worked out to roughly $8 per mile, and one Jacksonville-to-Georgia move was quoted at a $2,600 flat rate. For scale, a 350-mile move at that rate lands in the high two-thousands, which is in line with the Georgia example. These are past examples, not a price list or a promise for your move. Your inventory, access and date set the real number, so confirm your quote after the in-home visit.
Usually there's no deposit; short-notice bookings take a typical $100 deposit that comes off your final bill. We accept credit and debit cards and cash, but not personal checks, and we offer a 5% military discount. To bring the number down, purge before the walkthrough, pack the non-fragile rooms yourself, stay flexible on dates, and avoid the last week of the month in summer.

Binding vs. Non-Binding Estimates
The kind of estimate you sign matters as much as the number on it. For interstate moves, federal rules recognize three types:
- Binding estimate: a fixed price for the items and services listed. If you add items or services, the mover can revise it in writing before loading, but it can't raise the price on the same shipment after the fact.
- Non-binding estimate: the mover's best guess, with the final bill based on actual weight and services. To protect you from lowball quotes, the mover must release your goods at delivery when you pay 110% of the estimate, and it can't demand the rest sooner than 30 days after delivery.
- Binding not-to-exceed: you pay the binding price or the actual weight-based charge, whichever is lower.
A legitimate interstate mover looks at your belongings before quoting. Federal rules generally require a physical or virtual survey of your goods when your home is within 50 miles of the mover's location, unless you waive it in writing. A whole-house price over the phone, sight unseen, is a warning sign. The written estimate should spell out services, packing, any access charges and the valuation option you chose. Our estimators come to your home and put a firm quote in writing. In-state moves, such as Jacksonville to Tampa or Pensacola, follow Florida's moving law instead. Get the estimate in writing and ask how changes are handled before you sign.
Valuation Coverage: What Happens if Something Breaks
Valuation is the mover's liability for your belongings. It's often called insurance, but it isn't.
- Full value protection is the default on interstate moves unless you sign to choose otherwise. The mover must repair the item, replace it, or pay its current value. It costs more than released value, and anything worth more than a typical $100 per pound under federal tariff rules, like jewelry, art or collectibles, typically has to be listed in writing on the high-value inventory to be fully covered.
- Released value costs nothing extra and protects very little. Liability is capped at 60 cents per pound per article, so a 40-pound TV destroyed in transit is worth only about $24 under this option, whatever you paid for it. You have to sign for it in writing.
Also check whether your homeowner's or renter's policy covers goods in transit, and consider a separate policy for high-value pieces. We always recommend carrying personal jewelry, cash and irreplaceable documents with you rather than loading them onto the truck. Leaving Florida vs. Moving Within Florida
Many moving pages blur this line, and it decides which rules protect you.
- Out-of-state moves (Georgia, the Carolinas, anywhere beyond Florida) fall under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The mover needs a USDOT number and interstate household goods authority (an MC number), must give you the federal booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move and the Ready to Move? brochure, and must offer a neutral arbitration program for certain claims. You can look up any interstate mover on FMCSA's Protect Your Move site.
- In-state moves (Orlando, Tampa, Miami, Tallahassee, Pensacola) are long-distance but not interstate, so those federal consumer rules don't apply. Florida's moving law (Chapter 507, Florida Statutes) does, and movers must be registered with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Red Flags When Hiring a Long-Distance Mover
- A firm whole-house price over the phone, with no in-home or video survey.
- A large cash deposit demanded before anything moves.
- No USDOT, MC or state registration number on the website, estimate or paperwork.

May through September is the busiest stretch of the year. Book six to eight weeks ahead if you can. Hurricane Season
The Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30, and the busiest weeks usually fall between mid-August and mid-October. A storm can close roads, hold a truck or push a closing date. Build a couple of buffer days into your plan, keep documents, medications and valuables in your car, and ask your mover how rescheduling works if a storm interferes.
Florida Heat
